Wind River launches cloud-native edge platform used by Verizon

Wind River has launched Studio^[2], a cloud-native platform for the development, deployment, operations, and servicing of mission-critical intelligent systems.

The first iteration of the platform simplifies the deployment and management of intelligent 5G distributed edge clouds.

Kevin Dallas, Wind River president and CEO, explains:

“Wind River Studio is the first and only of its kind to deliver one environment for mission-critical intelligent systems across the full product lifecycle.

This new platform offers dramatic improvements in productivity, agility, and time-to-market, with seamless technology integration that includes far edge cloud compute, data analytics, system-level security, 5G, and AI/ML.”

US telecoms giant Verizon is an early adopter of Studio and uses it for its 5G vRAN deployment. Wind River’s platform helped Verizon achieve the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualised 5G data session in August last year.

Adam Koeppe, SVP of Technology and Planning for Verizon, said at the time:

“Virtualising the entire network from the core to the edge has been a massive, multi-year redesign effort of our network architecture that simplifies and modernises our entire network.

Verizon has been on the leading edge of virtualising the core over the past few years and has been bullish in the design and development of open RAN technology, as well as in the testing of that technology with great success.”

Verizon says Wind River provided the company with Kubernetes- and container-based software infrastructure which provided ultra-low latency for the deployment of its virtualised 5G RAN. The company went on to say Wind River’s solution is integrated with best-in-class vRAN applications, enables automated management, and provides key network analytics.

Gartner predicts that more than 50 percent of enterprise data will be created and processed outside the traditional data center or cloud by 2022—as compute workloads evolve to an intelligent cloud and intelligent edge model.

“Containers and Kubernetes are becoming the foundation for building this cloud-native infrastructure to improve software velocity and developer productivity,” Gartner says.

“By 2022, more than 75 percent of global organisations will be running containerised applications in production, which is a significant increase from fewer than 30 percent today.”

Wind River is now making Studio available to all interested companies to help them achieve similar success with their edge deployments as Verizon.
